Introduction

Understanding equality, diversity and cultural competence is vital if we want to deliver person-centred, safe and effective care. Diversity is about valuing peoples’ differences and addressing their different needs and situations.

This unit will help you to understand how equality, diversity and culture impact the delivery of person centred health services.

Understanding local Equality and Diversity- self assessment

Think about what equality and diversity are. The following definition may help you:

'Equality is about creating a fairer society where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Diversity is about recognising and valuing difference in its broadest sense.' NES

The Equality Act (2010) sets out a range of categories of unlawful treatment, including direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation and failing to make a reasonable adjustment for a disabled person. 

Thinking about the information above:

  • how do you often do you think about equality and diversity in your day-to-day work?
  • how do you ensure that the care you provide and your actions support equality and diversity?
  • do you actively reflect on equality and diversity?
  • can you think of experiences that have made you aware of equality and diversity?
  • are there other actions that you can take, or changes you could make, to ensure that you are supporting equality and diversity?
  • what do you need to learn more about to help you make these changes?
